Minimalist packing with a toddler

Were off on our first backpacker trip as a family tomorrow. We’ll be limited to just two bags as we have a little person to carry too. One rucksack and one small backpack for all three of us for two weeks! We’ve always packed pretty light when traveling. less stuff = less stress 🙂

Here’s a few things we do to minimise our packing:

1)Wear your bulkiest clothes on the plane: It can be a savour when trying to get away from paying for extra baggage weight. In our case our bulkiest clothes will still be pretty light as we’ll we’ll have to carry them the rest of our trip.

2)Bring layering clothes: Instead of bringing lots of bulky items that aren’t much use once you get to other end, bring lots of layers. We’ll be wearing light clothes layered up to keep us warm in Ireland that can be striped off once we hit the high temperatures at the other end.

3)Bring multi purpose items: When your short on space theres nothing better than multi purpose clothes & accessories. For example sarong that doubles as a beach towel, shade cover, dress or a scarf when arriving home.

4)Bring reusable Mini’s toiletries: Minis are great for saving space however not so great if you buy new small plastic containers each time, just reuse them! Ive had the same mini bottles of shampoo, conditioner & face moisturiser for about 7 years now. I just rinse the bottles out after each trip, leave them clean and refill them before we head off again.

5)Only bring key items: Think back to your last trip, did you end up wearing half the things you brought? What where the items you lived in? Mine are always denim shorts, skirts & light tops, all can be mix & matched to create new outfits and I rarely feel Im short on something to wear.

6)Set limits: I used three tote bags, one for me, one for max & one for Iza. If it doesn’t fit in the tote bag we cant bring it. They also help to keep things slightly organised compared to it all being thrown straight into the rucksack.

7)Bring washing powder: Not sure where I picked up this habit (maybe my granny?) but I always bring some washing powder so we can easily hand wash & freshen up our clothes as we travel.

8) And of course never be without your refillable water bottles and keep cups!

Wish us luck!
